Honourable John Smith, MP
Member of Parliament for Tottenham West
(Address, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc., as per preferred communication method)
Dear Mr. Smith,
My name is Menelik Tewodros, and I am a resident of your constituency, living at the above address. I am a British citizen originally from Ethiopian heritage, specifically from the Amhara ethnic group, one of the largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia. I am writing to urgently seek your representation and intervention on behalf of myself, my family, and my community, who are currently facing grave and immediate threats.
My immediate family and relatives, who reside in the Amhara Regional State and other parts of Ethiopia, are being subjected to unimaginable violence. Many of my loved ones have been brutally murdered by the government and affiliated armed groups, particularly in the Wollega, Arsi Zones and Shewa. Those who remain are trapped, living in constant fear and danger, as they face daily threats of violence and death.
The government, which should be protecting its citizens, is instead perpetrating atrocities through indiscriminate drone attacks carried out with equipment purchased from Turkey and Iran, close allies of the current Ethiopian administration under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. These attacks have indiscriminately targeted civilians, and my family is among those suffering.
The situation in the Amhara Regional State is dire. Thousands of schools have been shut down, depriving millions of children of their basic human right to education. Beyond the loss of education, these children are being killed in barbaric acts of violence, targeted simply for being Amhara. Christians people, monks, priest, religious students known as yekolo temari, and other civilians are being slaughtered with unimaginable brutality.
Health facilities are non-functional, and even the most basic medical supplies are unavailable, causing women, children, and the elderly to suffer needlessly. According to reports from the Amhara Regional Agricultural Bureau, nearly half of the arable land remains uncultivated due to deliberate actions by the current regime, which has purposefully invaded these areas to impoverish Amhara farmers. This intentional destruction of livelihoods through military incursions, corruption, and intimidation is a deliberate act designed to subjugate the Amhara people.
The targeted and systematic violence against the Amhara people, led by the Abiy Ahmed government and dominated by Oromo ethnic groups, is driving my family and community towards extinction. This ongoing ethnic cleansing has been well documented by credible international organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Amhara Association of America (AAA). These below are some sample reports.

I am respectfully requesting your office to take my concerns seriously and raise this issue with the British government. Diplomatic action is urgently needed to address the plight of the Amhara people and to hold those responsible accountable through international justice mechanisms. As a British citizen, I implore you to use your platform to advocate for the protection of human rights and an end to the violence that is destroying my community.
I would be more than willing to meet with you in person to further discuss this matter and provide any additional information that may be helpful.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your prompt response and hopeful action on this urgent matter.
Yours sincerely,
Menelik Tewodros
